Whether you’re buying your first car or your tenth, knowing the right questions can save you thousands. This guide covers out-the-door pricing, doc fees, F&I office tactics, trade-in valuation, and financing — at any dealership, not just ours.
The questions to ask every dealer
Pricing and fees
- Is the price shown the final price?
- What is the total out-the-door price, including taxes and all fees?
- Is the vehicle at true MSRP, with no market adjustment?
- Can I see an itemized breakdown of every doc fee, prep fee, and add-on?
Financing and the F&I office
- Is my interest rate the buy rate I qualify for, or has it been marked up?
- Can I see my approved rate and lender name directly?
- Are any add-ons or warranties required to receive this rate?
- Are the extended warranty and GAP insurance optional? What does each cost?
Trade-in
- How was my trade-in value calculated?
- Is the trade offer guaranteed even if I don’t buy today?
- Are my trade and purchase price being negotiated separately?
- Will my loan payoff be handled directly?
Final comfort check
- Do I understand every number on the deal sheet?
- Have all my questions been answered without pressure?
- Is the price the same for everyone, not based on negotiating skill?
Out-the-door price: the number that matters
The out-the-door price is the true total: vehicle price, sales tax, title, registration, doc fee, and any mandatory add-ons. Many stores advertise a low sticker and add fees at the end — always get the out-the-door price in writing first. Our Promise Price works the other way around: every number disclosed upfront, tax and license included, no last-minute surprises.
The fees you’ll meet in Utah
- Doc fee — paperwork processing; varies by store, often $100–$600 in Utah.
- Destination charge — set by the manufacturer for shipping, typically $1,000–$2,000, non-negotiable anywhere.
- Dealer prep fee — sometimes charged for cleaning and inspection; often redundant, since destination already covers prep.
- Advertising fee — some stores pass marketing costs to buyers; this one is negotiable.
Ask for an itemized breakdown of every fee before signing anything.
Is your loan rate marked up?
The buy rate is the lowest rate a lender approves you for. Many dealerships mark it up — called dealer reserve — and keep the difference, often without disclosing it. Over the life of a loan that can cost thousands. Ask directly: “Is this the buy rate I qualify for?” Getting pre-approved through your bank or credit union first gives you a real benchmark, and you’re never obligated to use dealer financing. Our financing is commission-free and your rate is never marked up.
What happens in the F&I office
The finance office is where add-ons appear: extended warranties, GAP insurance, paint protection, prepaid maintenance, tire and wheel coverage. None are required to complete a purchase or qualify for a rate. GAP is worth considering if you’re financing more than 80% of the vehicle’s value — but compare your own insurer’s price first. Never let items get bundled into a monthly payment without knowing each one’s individual cost.
Red flags to walk away from
Be cautious if a store refuses a written out-the-door price, adds fees that weren’t discussed, won’t show your lender name or rate, bundles trade-in and purchase into one monthly-payment conversation, pressures a same-day signature, or requires add-ons to get your loan rate. A trustworthy store answers every question without hesitation.
